After then, he was trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the State Key Laboratory for Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering of Tongji University, Shanghai, and appointed as associate professor in July 2000 at the same institute. From Aug. 2004 to Oct. 2004, he got joint funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Chinese Ministry of Education, and carried out a research stay at the Department of Civil Engineering, RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany.
