Title: Wireless Sensor Network Applications in Structural Engineering

    Speaker: Dr. Zhenhua Huang,

    Assistant Professor

    Department of Engineering Technology

    University of North Texas

Abstract:

Performing full-scale structural testing is an important methodology for researchers and engineers in the structural engineering industry. Full scale testing helps the researchers understand civil infrastructures’ loading scenarios, behaviors, and health conditions. It helps the engineers verify, polish, and simplify the structural design and analysis theories. To conduct a full-scale structural testing, sensors are used for data acquisitions. Structural researchers and engineers use sensors to record all kind of physical parameters of civil infrastructures and to convert these parameters to analog or digital signals. Based upon data communication strategies, sensors used for civil-structure testing could be divided into traditional cabled sensors and wireless sensors. Wireless sensing technologies employ wireless communications. They can be wireless accelerometers, wireless strain sensors, wireless thermal sensors, and many other types of sensors with wireless communication functions. This lecture will review the wireless sensing techniques for full-scale structural testing applications, especially focusing on the new Illinois WSSN package. It is expected to help structural researchers and engineers get familiar with thewireless sensing technologies.

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Zhenhua Huang is an assistant professor in department of engineering technology at University of North Texas (UNT). He got his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. Dr. Huang’s research interests include on-site full scale structural testing using wireless sensor network, high-rise building lateral resisting system, and wind and earthquake engineering. He has published more than 10 articles on those topics since joining UNT in 2008. Dr. Huang has developed a full-scale on-site structural testing laboratory at UNT for research and education, which is equipped with the most advanced wireless smart sensor network instruments. In addition, Dr. Huang has rich industrial experience on high-rise building wind and earthquake design and analysis. While working as a structural engineer in New York City, New Jersey, and China, Dr. Huang has designed the wind and earthquake resisting systems for more than 30 high-rise buildings, including some world famous skyscrapers such as the new World Trade Center - Tower 2, Tower 3, and the Dubai Tower in UAE.

Recruiting

Research assistantship positions for two Master students at the Department of Engineering Technology and one PhD student at Department of Electrical Engineeringat University of North Texas (UNT) are available.
