报告简介 (Outline) :
Civil Engineers fulfill the critical role of persevering human life through our strategies and designs; however, without the creative spin on our innovative ideas and their applications, we fail to capture our reader's interest in our thesis work, journal publications, and research grant proposals.  Effective technical writing is needed to survive at a fast paced research and development company, and through this experience came several tips and tricks for fast and effective technical documents.  This seminar is geared toward motivating the serious student, researcher, and professor to write with the motivation to capture a larger audience and win research proposals.  Several concepts will be discussed including: A plan for the document, effective document structures, help with your document, critical literature reviews and references, examples of effective and ineffective technical writing components, the pros and cons of different software for writing different technical documents, and the effects of mistakes.

报告人简介 (About the Speaker) :

Dr. Johnson received his Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in 2010.  He conducted his postdoctoral fellowship at Georgia Tech developing new Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) tools.  He then joined a research and development (R&D) firm specializing in Aerospace Engineering projects funded by the Department of Defense (DOD).  Working with the R&D firm, Dr. Johnson developed NDE tools for NASA, NAVAIR, and the US Air Force.  In August 2012, Dr. Johnson joined the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Joint Institute as an Associate Research Scientist.  His research topics include composite mechanics, biomechanics and NDE.
