Abstract:
The 1st lecture focuses on advances and applications of hybrid simulation (HS) where a physical phenomenon
is tackled by combining analytical simulations with physical monitoring and actuating. Four endeavors are
discussed: 1) Development of a real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) system for testing high voltage
electrical substation equipment on a shaking table; 2) Implementation of an advanced control method for
the enhancement of RTHS; 3) Establishment of a theoretical framework to evaluate the HS technique in
structural dynamics based on computational mechanics fundamentals; and 4) Extension of HS for a problem
of multi-physics phenomena to consider thermal & optical properties.
The 2nd and 3rd lectures are an overview of experimental methods in structural engineering based on
a course Prof. Mosalam teaches at UCB: Experimental Methods in Structural Engineering. This is a
basic (e.g. modeling, similitude, sensors, data acquisition, control) and advanced (e.g. laser scanning)
coverage of experimental research methodologies for the evaluation of structures.
About the Speaker:
Prof. Mosalam obtained his BS and MS from Cairo Univ.. In 1996, he earned his PhD from Cornell
Univ. in Structural Engineering. In 1997, he joined the faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental
Eng., UCB where he is currently a professor of structural engineering. He conducts research on the performance
and health monitoring of structural systems of concrete, masonry, and wood subjected to extreme loads. He
is active in the areas of assessment and rehabilitation of essential facilities such as bridges and electrical
substations. He is also active in the area of building energy efficiency and sustainability. His research approach
covers large-scale computations (deterministic and probabilistic) and physical testing including hybrid
simulations. Mosalam is the recipient of the 2006 ASCE Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research
Prize “For advanced computational research integrated with large experiments to solve practical structural
engineering problems.” Because of his international collaboration for seismic safety and regulations of low
cost housing in Morocco, Mosalam was awarded the 2013 UCB Chancellor award for Public Services.
He was a visiting prof. in Kyoto Univ., Japan, Middle East Technical Univ., Turkey, and Nanyang Technological
Univ., Singapore. At present, Mosalam is a high-end expert of Tongji Univ.
