GUIDELINES, PROCEDURES AND AWARDS
1. Students registered at an accredited college or university, either as graduate or undergraduate students, are eligible
to submit papers. While co-authorship with other students and faculty advisers is permitted, a lead student author
must be identified for communication purposes. Not more than one lead author and two co-authors (for a total of
three authors, including faculty advisor(s)), are allowed. The lead student author of each paper must provide
verification that he/she was a registered student at the time the paper was submitted.
2. A 150–200 word abstract must be submitted by the Lead Author.
3. Abstracts should be submitted to the PVP 2013 Conference Web tool at http://www.asmeconferences.org/pvp2014.
A Student Paper Symposium & Competition session is contained within each of the PVPD Technical Committee
Tracks. Your abstract should be entered into one of the Student Paper Symposium & Competition sessions. Only
papers submitted directly to the Student Paper Symposium & Competition sessions are eligible for the Student
Paper Competition. Papers submitted to non-student technical sessions WILL NOT be eligible for the Student
Paper Competition. After paper selection is completed, all the selected papers will be moved to the Student Paper
Competition (SPC) Track by the organizers. Therefore, please do not submit the abstract to the SPC Track directly.
4. Each student author should be identified as a Ph.D., MS or BS student in the Abstract. Papers in the BS/MS
category must be authored by students with BS or MS status at the time the paper was submitted. Papers in the
Ph.D. category must be authored by students with Ph.D. status at the time the paper was submitted. Upon
acceptance of the abstract, a draft paper, which will be reviewed in accordance with ASME peer review procedures,
must be submitted. Comments from the reviewers will be forwarded to the lead author.
5. Draft papers that meet the acceptance criteria will be invited for full paper submission. The final paper must be
written in accordance with the ASME Publication Guidelines, and all reviewers’ comments must be resolved.
6. On April 28, 2014, the Senate Review Committee will identify, for presentation at the Rudy Scavuzzo Student Paper
Symposium & Competition of the 2014 PVP Conference, a total aggregate of 16 student papers selected as finalists
for the Competition from the two separate categories — the Ph.D. level and the BS/MS level, and another total
aggregate of 16 student papers selected for the Symposium as honorable mentions. Only accepted final papers will
be considered for participation to the Rudy Scavuzzo Student Paper Symposium & Competition. Accepted final
papers from finalists and honorable mentions will be published in an appropriate Conference Publication, and will be
invited for presentation at the Student Paper Symposium. Accepted final student papers not selected for the
Symposium will be forwarded to, and may be presented at, the regular Conference sessions.

7. For each of the Ph.D. and BS/MS categories, only one participant may be selected for the Rudy Scavuzzo Student
Paper Symposium & Competition from any participating academic institution.
8. Finalists from previous Conferences may only be re-selected as finalists in a different category, i.e., BS/MS to Ph.D.
9. The lead student author MUST present the paper in one of the Student Paper Symposium sessions at the
Conference to be eligible for the awards, competition prizes, or certificates
10. Finalist papers will be judged, along with others in the finalist sessions, based on written technical content and
presentation effectiveness. The Student Paper Competition Judges will select, at their discretion, in each category
(Ph.D. and BS/MS), one Outstanding Student Paper, one First Runner-Up Student Paper, and one Second
Runner-Up Student Paper.
11. Each lead student author of the finalist papers will receive a PVP Certificate of Recognition, or a Special Certificate
for the winning papers. A travel allowance of $1,500 will be awarded to the presenting author of each finalist paper.
In addition, in each category (i.e., Ph.D. and BS/MS), $1,200 will be awarded to the presenting author of the
Outstanding Student Paper; $1000 will be awarded to the presenting author of the First Runner-Up Student Paper,
and $800 will be awarded to the presenting author of the Second Runner-Up Student Paper.
12. Each lead student author of the honorable mention papers will receive a PVP Certificate of Recognition. A travel
allowance of $1,000 will be awarded to the presenting author of each honorable mention paper. In addition, in
each category (i.e., Ph.D. and BS/MS), $800 will be awarded to the best presenting author.
13. A one year FREE membership in ASME and a copy of the electronic Conference Proceedings will be provided to all
Student Paper Symposium & Competition student authors and student co-authors attending the Conference.
14. Student Paper Symposium attendees are invited to attend the Conference-Wide Reception on Monday,
July 21, 2014, and the PVP Honors Luncheon on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.
15. All student authors must make their own arrangements for travel and hotel accommodations.
16. Student authors must register for the Conference and attend the Honors Luncheon where the winners will be
announced and presented with their awards.
