December 12-15, 2025

Shanghai, China

(2ndDraft, as of September 28, 2025)

 Hosted by

College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University
State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering

Mitigation Branch of China Association for Disaster Prevention

Introduction

Since 2008, ten Kwang-Hua Forums have been successfully held at Tongji University. The objective of the forum was originally to provide an environment for experts around the world to present and exchange recent progress and implementation of earthquake engineering research. The forum was also aimed to promote international collaborationon how to achieve practical implementation of earthquake engineering research through planning, design, construction and maintenance.

The themes of the forums have beencarefully selected to match the state-of-the-art earthquake engineering research around the world. The first Kwang-Hua Forum was held in October 2008. The theme was focused on the 8-magnitude Wenchuan earthquake which hit Southwestern region of China in May 2008. Detailed earthquake effect and post-earthquake reconstruction were discussed in this forum. The second Kwang-Hua Forum was held in October 2009, where the theme was focused on Performance-based Design Theoryand Code Development for Civil and Structural Engineering. In October 2010, the third Kwang-Hua Forum was held with the focus on Sustainable Civil Engineering. The fourth Kwang-Hua Forum was held in conjunction with the grand opening symposium of Tongji Multi-Functional Shaking Table Array in December 2011. The fifth to tenth Kwang-Hua Forums were held in December 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2023 with the focus on the Innovations and Implementations in Earthquake Engineering Research.

The Eleventh Kwang-Hua Forum is scheduled to be held on December 12-15, 2025. Instead of solely focusing on earthquake engineering research, the theme of the 11th Kwang-Hua Forum this year will be focused on the Innovations and Implementations in Disaster Resilience Research.

Scope

The topics of the Eleventh Kwang-Hua Forum shall include but are not limited to:

  • Research and development of disaster resilient structures

  • Performance-based seismic design of structures/non-structural elements

  • Earthquake ground motions and their effects to structures

  • Earthquake damages and lessons learned from recent earthquakes

  •  Advanced structural experimental techniques

  • Disasterprotection of lifeline structures

  • Disasterrelated geotechnical engineering

  •  Seismic retrofitting of structures using advanced technologies

  •  Seismic design code developments and related issues

  •  Multi-hazard study of civil structures

  • AI-based methods for the disaster analysis, design, and evaluation
